Cursusdoelen

The aim of the course Sport Psychology is that students (1) gain knowledge, insight, and overview of important sport psychological theories and research; and (2) are able to apply this knowledge to practical cases.

After this course you will be able to:

  • Explain athletes’ behaviour, motivation, cognitions and emotions based on situational factors and individual characteristics.
  • Explain how athletes’ behaviour, motivation, cognition and emotion can influence their performance.
  • Provide a critical analysis of scientific and pseudo-scientific ‘knowledge’, and ‘simple recipes’ regarding sport psychological training and treatment.
  • Point out which kind of questions sport psychologists are dealing with and explain how sport psychological research and theory can contribute to sports practice.
  • Apply knowledge about sport psychological research and theory to practical cases
  • Provide advice on how – given certain baseline conditions – environmental factors (in training and/or competition) can be designed to improve the motivation, learning, and performance of athletes.
  • Provide advice on how – given certain baseline conditions – mental skills can be applied to improve the motivation, learning, and performance of athletes.
Inhoud

Sport Psychology examines human behaviour and cognition in sport situations. Sport Psychological research is targeted towards the determinants of sport-related behaviour (i.e., person and environment) and the effects of that behaviour in terms of performance and health. This concerns elite sports (e.g., why do some athletes perform better under high-pressure than others?) as well as physical exercise in general (e.g., can music motivate me to get more out of my evening run?).
Sport psychological research aims to explain and predict performance-related behaviour and cognitions. In sport psychology practice, sport psychologists aim to influence the behaviour, motivation, cognitions and emotions of athletes to improve individual or team performance. Against this background, the course Sport Psychology presents an overview of important sport psychological theories and research. In the course lectures and theme-specific practicals attention will be given to sport psychological theories and research as well as important questions from sport psychology practice.

Course topics include:

  • Motivation en performance
  • Human movement behaviour
  • Performing under pressure
  • Fatique and performance: unable or unwilling?
  • Personality and talent and talent identification
  • Performance enhancement and mental skills
  • Coaching and team sports
