Aims
In this course students acquire:
  1. knowledge of the major psychotherapeutic schools and a number of new, frequently employed forms of psychotherapy
  2. insight into the application of psychotherapy
  3. a questioning, scientific and critical attitude with regard to the forms and effects of psychotherapy. How strong is the evidence, and what is based merely on assumptions and beliefs?
Content
The Psychotherapy course in the third year of the Bachelor's programme provides education in the area of psychotherapy and psychological treatment of children, adults and the elderly.

The course first addresses the question of what constitutes psychological change and factors, such as the clients' commitment and the quality of the therapeutic relationship, can contribute to achieving such change. This starting point creates a framework for the remainder of the course. We then turn to the major psychotherapeutic schools and current forms of psychotherapy: behaviour therapy, cognitive therapy, psychodynamic psychotherapy, client-centred psychotherapy, group therapy, couple and system therapy, and schema therapy. We will also discuss subjects related to research, such as treatment outcome research, evidence-based treatments, and clinical judgement, as well as practical issues such as motivating patients, working with patients with personality disorders, doing internships and working as a health-care psychologist. A unique aspect of this course is that the majority of the lectures include live or video demonstrations of the therapeutic methods under discussion.
