Aims
  1. You conduct a professional conversation through adequate communication skills, in which the conversation partner is able to clarify his/ her problems. The outcome of the conversation is a joint choice of the thought or behaviour of the conversation partner that is most relevant in relation to the main problem.
  2. You can formulate hypotheses about possible maintaining factors in the conversation partner with regard to thoughts or behaviour that he/ she experiences as problematic.
  3. You systematically reflect on your professional development, including at least your conversation skills and professional behaviour (such as active participation during the workgroups, actively process feedback from your team members and giving constructive feedback to your team members).
Content
Conversational Skills in Psychology is a practical course that requires a lot of active participation from teachers and students, both during the workgroup meetings and beyond. You will actively use role plays during the workgroup meetings, reflect on yourself, and receive and give feedback. In addition to the workgroup meetings, you will work on individual and team-based self-study assignments, which will often involve performing and reflecting on role plays. Different cases will be used in the workgroup meetings, to familiarize yourself with specific aspects of working with various individuals and different types of problems.

Information on assesments

In this course, conversational skills for problem clarification will be taught, and integrated with basic conversational attitude and skills. Self-reflection skills and interpretation skills will be assessed in a written assignment.
  • Problem clarification (60%). Are you able to conduct an adequate professional conversation, in which the conversation partner is able to clarify his/ her problems?
  • Written assignment (40%). Are you able to systematically reflect on your professional development, including at least your conversation skills and professional behaviour? Based on the problem clarification conversation, are you able to formulate hypotheses about possible maintaining factors in the client with regard to thoughts or behaviour that he/ she experiences as problematic?
Note: both exams will need to be graded with at least a 5,5 to pass the course.
