Cursusdoelen
At the end of the course the student is able:
  1. to understand the criteria by which evidence-based interventions are identified and to know the process by which they are studied; (2,5,9)
  2. to use the “Effectladder” database in order to evaluate the evidence base of existing treatment in real-world settings (2,5,9)
  3. to identify a subset of evidence-based interventions that target some of the main child and adolescent disorders (2,5,9)
  4. to apply the knowledge on evidence-based interventions to a specific clinical case (7)
Inhoud
Students in this course will be introduced to the principles of evidence-based practice and will be taught a series of empirically-supported treatments and community practice that best address a set of common child and adolescent disorders. The course will begin with an overview of common guidelines that have been established for how to identify best practices. To understand the broad range of clinical activities that underlie evidence-based practice, discussions of interventions will be supplemented with issues concerning psychological assessment, case formulation and therapeutic relationship factors. Students will come to understand that empirically-supported treatments are identified on the basis of randomized controlled trials, but also through complex decision-making processes that include considerations of the community context, available resources, and client characteristics. Finally, a critical analysis concerning the extent to which these interventions address developmental and causal processes identified in previous courses will be encouraged.

The following topics will be covered in the lectures:
  • The what, why and which of an intervention?
    • What's an intervention
    • Why are we doing them?
  • Evidence-based treatments in developmental psychopathology
    • How to identify best available research evidence
  • Cognitive-behavioural Therapy
  • Psychodynamically-informed therapies
  • Parent counseling/parent management skills
  • Systems therapy
  • The next generation
    • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
    • Neurofeedback
    • Meditation/Mindfulness
    • E-health and applied gaming
  • Nonspecific/common factors in treatment
  • Critical analysis: moderators/mediators
