Content
An internship at an academic or non-academic institution may be part of the research master programme Social and Cultural Science. Internships are work-related learning experiences that provide students with the chance to gain important knowledge and skills related to the professional side of empirical research in practice. They provide exposure to career fields of interest without making a permanent commitment.
Internships should have clearly defined learning objectives/goals related to the goals of the research master programme. To ensure that an internship experience is educational, and thus eligible to be considered a legitimate internship, the internship must be an extension of the SCS programme: i.e., a learning experience that provides for applying the knowledge gained in the programme. It must not be simply to advance the operations of the employer or be the work that a regular employee would routinely perform. The skills or knowledge learned must be transferable to other employment settings.
Also, there should be routine feedback by the experienced supervisor. This supervisor is a professional with expertise and educational and/or professional background in empirical social research. And there are resources, equipment, and facilities provided by the host employer that support the learning objectives/goals.
Students have to ask permission of the Examination Committee to enrol in the Internship. They are required to write a brief motivation letter and to explicitly state the learining objectives/goals, the internship supervisor, way of supervision. Students motivate how the internship contributes to the accumulation of knowledge, skills and research attitudes helpful to their future (research) career
A standardized form is available by the secretary of the RMSCS.
To fulfil the academic requirements of the internship students are required to submit an internship report of maximum 2000 words in which the following topics are covered:
•    Information on the host institution
•    Learning objectives
•    Activities at the host institution (please also elaborate on who decided upon these activities).
•    Workload (total amount of hours spend at the internship)
•    Description of endproducts and results
•    Collaboration (with whom did you collaborate)
•    Supervision by host institution
•    Process
•    Reflection on the scientific and societal significance of your internship
•    Reflection on how to apply and build on the experiences of your internship in your final RMSCS thesis.
