Cursusdoelen
  • The student understands the general organisation of function in the brain
  • The student understands signal generation and transmission in neurons
  • The student knows how sensory information is coded in taste-smell, vestibular, visual and auditory system
  • The student understands the mechanisms on which the motor system and muscle control are based
  • The student understands the main principles of the genetic basis of behaviour
  • The student understands the principles of pre  and post-natal brain development and neuro-degenerative/developmental disorders
  • The student understands the fundamental processes supporting cognitive functions such as memory and the physiology of sleep.
  • The student is able to report on experimental findings in a report
  • Student is able to apply knowledge about neuronal activity to simulate neuronal activity
  • Student is able to conduct a basic human neuroscience experiment
Inhoud
This course provides an overview of the main principles by which information is represented and transmitted in the brain to create actions as well as an introduction to the neural basis of perception and cognition in humans and animals. Attention will be given to topics such as neuro-degenerative and neuro-developmental disorders.

Topics:
  1. Basis of neural activity and transmission
  2. Representation of the environment by sensory systems (chemical, visual, auditory, vestibular and somatosensory)
  3. Motor functions and the underlying neurophysiological aspects
  4. The genetic basis of behaviour
  5. Pre and post-natal brain development
  6. Cognitive functions (such as memory) and the underlying neural substrates
  7. Sleep physiology
  8. Neuro-degenerative/developmental disorders
