Aims
At the end of the course you will be able to:
1.      identify pedagogical design principles for science education, especially for your own subject;
2.      evaluate an existing instructional product (e.g. lesson, lecture, practical, lesson series, master class) with attention to a specific pedagogical theme;
3. (re)Design an instructional product for an authentic educational context/setting (e.g. school, university, museum) with SDGs (sustainability development goals) integrated in the design. The product will be based on an instructional design model and a number of specific pedagogical themes;
4.      substantiate the different pedagogical design decisions and steps that lead to your final instructional product;
5.      evaluate your instructional product for alignment with the specific theme’s, usability, and relevancy, and adjust it based on feedback from experts/client;
6.      implement (part of) the self-designed educational product with fellow students and, if desired, also in the authentic setting/context (e.g. school).

Content
In the theoretical part of this course you will become acquainted with educational design models and pedagogical design principles for science education. You will work on this in the practical part of the course, in which you will (re)design your own instructional product based on an instructional design model, with specific attention to formative assessment and one of the following modern educational themes: context-based science education, collaborative learning approach, or digital education.

Topics
·         instructional design models
·         design principles for science education
·         subject specific pedagogies
·         formative assessment
·         collaborative learning approach
·         context-based science education
·         digital education

Method

In this course you will be given the task to (re)design and develop an instructional product (teaching and learning material) for an external stakeholder, in a specific educational context (secondary education, university, PUC of Science, museum, etc.). Stakeholders from different disciplines will propose a series of cases (e.g. lesson, lecture, practical, lesson series, master class) from which you can choose a project that interests you. You and your fellow students will form DOTs (teacher development teams) to support each other in the development of your individual instructional product.

Your design process is supported through lectures and weekly work meetings in which teachers provide 'tailor-made' guidance and where you receive feedback from fellow students. Also, you have many opportunities to present and try out parts of your design. If necessary, we also explore additional subject-specific pedagogical resources together. Towards the end of the course, you present your design to your expert teacher/stakeholder and process their feedback into an educational product that can be implemented in practice by practitioners. If desired, and where possible, you can implement your product in the authentic setting (e.g. school).

Attendance to the theoretical and practical lectures is compulsory.

Presumed foreknowledge
Successful completion of the FNWI012 course Learning and Teaching in Science (6 ec) is a prerequisite for taking this course.

Test information
You report on the design process that lead to your instructional product in a final report, in which you add the designed educational product (e.g. teaching materials, PowerPoint, teacher's manual) as an attachment. During a concluding symposium you and your development team give a joint presentation about your educational theme and you also present your own instructional design and product using a poster or a presentation. You also evaluate the design of one of your fellow students and give feedback on it.

Alongside, the stakeholder will be assessing the quality of the designed educational product (usability, relevancy, alignment etc.).

A condition to qualify for assessment is that you have actively contributed to your own learning (including by presenting your own work during the work meetings) and the learning of your fellow students (including by exchanging findings and giving feedback).

Specifics
This course can be taken simultaneously with the NWI-FNWI014 course Science Education in Context: scientific literacy (3 ec). Together with NWI-FNWI012 Learning and Teaching in Science (6 EC), these courses form the minor Didactiek van Bètawetenschappen (15 EC).

In this course (NWI-FNWI013) we use a combination of Dutch and English.
