In what ways do the philosophical traditions shape gender? How have feminist reflections on gender relations changed over time? What is the relation of gender and race? And what happens to gender when a postcolonial lens is applied? In this course you learn about the philosophical, theological, and postmodern backgrounds and constructions of sex and gender in Western tradition and culture. The course provides a brief overview of the history of feminist ideas from the Middle Ages until the 21st century. We then focus on contemporary theories of gender and race, with an emphasis on the role of the body. The final part of the course focuses on postcoloniality and examines the ways in which conditions of globalization and decentering of the West affect theories, practices and imaginations of gender and religion.
