This course focuses on competences, skills and knowledge that will be required for scientific research on biological invasions and risk analysis of alien species. After successful participation in the course you will be able:
  • to contribute in a multidisciplinary team to a scientific sound report and oral presentation on a risk assessment of an alien species that synthesize the current body of knowledge on their invasion biology.
  • to explain contemporary ecological theories and concepts of biological invasions within the context of environmental risk assessment and management of alien species;
  • to perform a climate and habitat match of alien species and to reflect critically on uncertainties of species sensitivity modelling;
  • to use indicators for analyses of pathways for introduction, spread, population establishment and impacts of alien species;
  • to identify high impact invaders and to understand their invasion biology;
  • to apply scientific sound protocols for environmental risk assessment of alien species;
  • to evaluate effectivity of management measures for biological invasions. 
Inhoud
Alien species are plants, animals, fungi and microorganisms that are accidentally or deliberately introduced by humans into a natural environment outside their natural biogeographical range. Circa 10 % of these species is potentially invasive and may cause a significant negative impact on their new environment, public health or economy. Biological invasions pose major risks to native species, ecosystem functioning, economy and/or public health. This course consists of six learning units:
  1. Theories and concepts of invasion biology;
  2. Spread, establishment and impacts of alien species;
  3. Climate and habitat match of alien species;
  4. Biology of high impact invaders;
  5. Risk assessment of alien species;
  6. Management of biological invasions.

Toetsinformatie
The course will be concluded with a written exam (60%, minimum grade = 5.5)  and grading of project outcomes (40%, no minimum grade).
