Cursusdoelen
  1. By the end of the course, you will be able to comprehend and critically reflect on the ways in which cities are imagined, lived and claimed across the world and how these urban experiences are shaped by ideology.
  2. You will be able to demonstrate the ways in which gender, ethnicity, class, colonialism and sexuality are constitutive of, and are constituted by, urban form and urban life and their representation through a range of concrete examples in different media, different cities, and different eras.
  3. You will also further hone your critical reading skills, your collaborative and critical discussion skills, and your theoretically informed spatial observation and analysis skills.
Inhoud
The city and its cultures are increasingly important topics in the field of Cultural Studies. This course investigates cultural imaginaries of cities, ways of sensing the urban environment and political claims to inhabit city space. From New York to Berlin and from Eindhoven to Beirut, the course looks at how city culture, the practices of city life and urban forms, have given form and substance to various identities and experiences over time and across Europe and the rest of the globe. In particular, it enquires into how urban space, life and imaginaries interact with subjectivity and its inflections along the lines of social class, gender, ethnicity and their intersections. Our approach is interdisciplinary, drawing on research in and across the fields of cultural studies, cultural geography, gender studies, history, urban studies and philosophy.
