Cursusdoelen
  • You will be able to explain complex communities from the perspective of animal ecology
  • Firstly, you unravel the complexity of those communities by studying life-history traits of various species
  • Thereafter you can take the functions of those life-history traits to evaluate in trade-offs the value species give to these traits
  • Finally, you can understand the complexity of the community and explain that for a.o. management purposes in animal ecological terms
  • The course is about half on animal ecological concepts, in the other half you may train yourself in practice (experiment, field excursion) and you will be trained in setting up animal ecological experiments in laboratory and field situations and to communicate about the results.
Inhoud
  • Energetics costs and trade-offs of animal adaptations (stress, life cycle, reproduction, development and dispersal)
  • Life-history tactics (integration of various adaptations)
  • Relations to the environment and other species (predator-prey interactions, functional responses,  parasitism, predation and defence)
  • Practicval examples from nature management and invasive species
