Aims
Upon completion of this course, the student can describe and ha understanding of:
  • Conceptual frameworks, history, practical organization, professional roles, policy, and recent developments concerning prevention and health promotion in the Netherlands and other countries.
  • Theoretical models about development of mental health problems, about determinants, behaviour change, prevention strategies and resilience, and their relevance for development of effective prevention and health promotion interventions.
  • Theory- and practice-guided prevention strategies, and strategies to influence behaviour and surroundings.
  • Underpinning and development of prevention programmes from thematic perspectives (e.g. Depression and anxiety disorders; Children of parents with mental disorders or addictions; Prevention of suicide and Prevention of trauma), methodological perspectives (e.g. E-health prevention, relapse prevention, community-directed prevention, improving resilience and self-management) and from effectiveness perspectives (e.g. effect predictors and effect management).
The student is also able to:
  • Explain and argue in favour of the importance of prevention and health promotion.
  • Critically consider existing practices in this field, identify the limitations and possible negative effects of these practices, and recognize opportunities for the improvement of existing prevention programs.
  • Apply new knowledge and skills by developing a preventive intervention on a current mental health theme.
  • Cooperate in a team with peers on a group assignment.

Aims of the examinations and assignment
  • The student is ableto reflect the learning objectives above via a group assignment and the final essay.
  • The student has mastered the material and can apply the theory to practical questions based on understanding.
 
Inhoud
During this course, you will acquire knowledge and understanding of 1) principles, conceptual framework, and practice; 2) effective strategies for prevention of mental disorders and the promotion of mental health; and 3) the scientific basis and development of such interventions with the use of stress and coping theories, social-cognitive behavior theories, development psychopathology, epidemiological knowledge (public health) and effect research. Care-related prevention strategies, as well as school-, community- and population-orientated approaches will be discussed.You will be able (4) to apply this knowledge and skills into practice by developing a preventive intervention in cooperation with peers.


Examples from practice will be provided of programs aimed at the prevention of depression, prevention of suicide, the intergenerational transmission of psychopathology, as in children of parents with mental or addiction problems, relapse prevention of alcohol abuse, prevention of trauma and promoting resilience.
You will practice your new knowledge, understanding and skills in a group assignment by designing a prevention program. You will cooperate in small groups with peers.

First-year Psychology programme or other first-year university programme.
Toetsinformatie
The exam consists of an Essay assignment. It will assess the students' knowledge and understanding of the course literature, the information provided in the lectures and the experiences of applying the knowledge in the group assignment.
