Presenter
Prof. Jan van Driel, Faculty of Education, The University of Melbourne, Australia
Jan van Driel is a Professor of Science Education and leader of the Mathematics, Science & Technology Education Group in the Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne, Australia. His research interests include science teacher knowledge, teacher education and professional learning, science and gender, and interdisciplinary science and STEM education. From 2016-2022 he was editor-in-chief of the International journal of Science Education.
A 2020 survey from the OECD among 400 science teachers from 22 countries revealed that although two thirds of the respondents indicated that the current science curriculum enables young people to become scientifically literate, only 31% considered current science education fit for the future.
In this session, I will demonstrate that the rapid increase of scientific knowledge has resulted in challenges for science education, such as overloaded curricula and pedagogical approaches that result in superficial learning. Looking to the future, and drawing on international research, I will review potential solutions to these challenges and discuss implications for teachers and teacher education.
