dr. Roel Smeets, Truth and Fake in the Digital Age
In this lecture we will explore how notions of truthfulness and fakeness have (not) changed in the present digital age. Our point of departure will be the idea that we currently live in a so-called ‘post-truth’-era, a period in history where truth is an increasingly less well-defined category. We will use the digital manipulation of images (‘photoshopping’ ) as a case study. Also, we will discuss how the ‘new sincerity’ movement in the arts can be framed as an artistic response to shifting ideas about truthfulness and fakeness.
11:30–12:15 uur
dr. Dennis Kersten, Metamodernism From A to Gen Z
The start of the twenty-first century is characterized by economical, political and environmental crises. We live in turbulent times, which is also reflected in the ways in which younger generations express themselves through the arts and media. "Metamodernism" is the word scholars use for these generations' particular responses to major societal changes. You can see it at work in Generation Z's use of irony on social media, but also in literature that criticizes binary thinking. In this mini-seminar we will discuss where metamodern art comes from and what it points to.
