This masterclass focuses on the relationship between social media and mental health. An increasing number of young people in the Netherlands experience anxiety and depression, often accompanied by stress, performance pressure, or loneliness. Yet social media posts often focus on the fun times and the ‘perfect’ moments. But how are mental health and mental illness portrayed online? We will explore, for example, awareness campaigns and personal narratives. How do social media users engage with this content and how can it affect them? In this masterclass, you will be introduced to the research field of mental health communication. You will learn how social media can shape our perceptions, our behaviours, and our understanding of mental health – as an individual and as a society. Because mental health matters: behind every post, scroll, and share is a real person.
