Obesity is a critical health problem in many countries: in the Netherlands, more than half of adults are overweight, causing serious physical problems such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain cancers. One of the leading causes of obesity is an unhealthy diet. Persuasive communication may convince people to change their diet. But how can we use language to persuade people to make healthier food choices? This masterclass will discuss the effects of sensory language (e.g., words like ‘crispy’ and ‘creamy’) on people’s desire for food. Sensory language uses descriptive words that appeal to the senses – sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. We will take practical examples from restaurant menus and will analyse whether there are differences in how healthy and unhealthy meals are described.
