Pascal Beckers is Associate Professor in Human Geography and Planning at the Radboud University (NL) with particular expertise on issues related to migrant inclusion, employment, housing and psychosocial wellbeing of migrants. He has been coordinating several small and large scale research projects funded by EU, ZonMw and NWO on foreign skills recognition, cultural diversity management policies and practices, labour market integration of refugees, (EU) labour migrants and irregular migrants, refugee mental health, cross-border governance of labour migration, housing issues of labour migrants. From April 2023 onwards he is coordinating the EU Horizon Europe project DignityFirm on EU governance of irregular migrants working in Farm to Fork sectors. He coordinates the Radboud University Network on Migrant Inclusion (RUNOMI), a university-wide network of 120+ scholars specialized in migrant inclusion issues, and he is programme lead of the university’s large-scale innovation initiative on digitalisation and migrant inclusion funded by the Dutch Ministry of Education.

2017 - 2022 Project: Positieve psychologie ter bevordering van mentale gezondheid en arbeidsmarktparticipatie van statushouders; Co-financiering: ZonMw en ESF SITS. In de regio Rijk van Nijmegen is een nieuwe interventie ingezet om het mentaal welzijn, de sociale netwerken en de kans op arbeidsmarktparticipatie van statushouders te vergroten. Het is een gezamenlijk initiatief van de gemeente Nijmegen, Het Werkbedrijf, de Radboud Universiteit, Vluchtelingenwerk, Pro Persona/Indigo, GGD en succesvol geïntegreerde statushouders. De interventie wordt ingezet naast het reguliere integratietraject en is gebaseerd op de principes van de positieve psychologie. Zijn de principes van de positieve psychologie ook bij deze doelgroep werkzaam om mentaal welzijn en sociale netwerkvorming te verhogen? Draagt deze interventie daarmee bij aan het verhogen van de kans op arbeidsmarktparticipatie? Experts van de Radboud Universiteit onderzoeken de werking van deze interventie. Meer informatie
2020 - 2022 Project: Migranten in de frontlinie; Financiering: ZonMw. Arbeidsmigranten vervullen essentieel werk in cruciale sectoren. Tijdens de COVID-19 crisis staan zij in de frontlinie en lopen daarbij gezondheidsrisico’s. Hun bescherming vraagt daarom urgente aandacht. Een interdisciplinair onderzoeksteam van het Radboud University Network on Migrant Inclusion (RUNOMI) gaat, met De Burcht en partners uit het veld, onderzoeken welke structurele problemen rond arbeidsmigratie de coronacrisis heeft blootgelegd en welke kansen deze crisis biedt om de bescherming van arbeidsmigranten te verbeteren. Ook wordt gezocht naar innovaties die cruciale sectoren minder afhankelijk maken van kwetsbare migranten. Omdat arbeidsmigranten vaak grensoverschrijdend werken en wonen, focust dit onderzoek zich op de grensregio’s (Nederland/Noordrijn-Westfalen). Meer informatie
2023 - 2026 DignityFIRM contributes to improving conditions of irregular migrants (IM) working in Farm to Fork (F2F) labour markets in four EU member states (IT, NL, PL, SP) and two associated countries (MO, UA). To derive structural recommendations for improvements, we analyze regulatory infrastructures that govern these conditions distinguishing five influential spheres of stakeholders at the EU, national, and local levels, and at the level of employers and IM themselves. By providing knowledge and innovative tools to improve regulatory infrastructures, this project enhances IM’s access to basic rights and services, and improves their precarious working conditions. Our project adopts a mixed-method research approach, that includes a special focus on the division of labour in F2F markets with respect to gender, ethnicity, socio-economic status, health and safety. 2024 - 2026 GS4S seeks to better understand global skills shortages in selected sectors (Digital, Care and Construction) and strengthens evidence-based policies through new evidence on various overlooked global mobility schemes. Uniquely, a multilevel business perspective is central to the project, juxtaposing local strategies for filling skills shortages of Multinational Enterprises and SMEs in global value chains. Moreover, we focus on skilled (migrant) workers experiences with skilling, upskilling and reskilling in EU and non-EU regional contexts. This mixed-methods research initiative, implemented with 10 EU and non-EU partners, proposes policies on labour migration governance and alternative ways for addressing these shortages in six regions (EU, EEA, Western Balkan, Middle East and Northern Africa, West Africa, and South/South-East Asia). 2023 - 2026 This project aims to improve the situation of transnational migrant workers in the Euroregion through cross-border exchange and the development of cross-border cooperation structures. To this end, project activities in three thematic areas are planned: (a) Social guidance; b) Work and business; c) Housing and living together. Cross-border cooperation between expert and advisory bodies on the German and Dutch side of the border in the Euregio contributes to improving their efficiency by giving them a better understanding of legal and administrative structures. With thematic project activities, in which solutions to problems are worked out, advisory centers of municipalities, trade unions, and other civil society organizations on both sides of the border enable them to gain a comprehensive understanding of the problems of transnational migrant workers to advise and take further action.
