Adem studied philosophy at Galatasaray University. He completed his master's degree at Paris-Sorbonne University, where he authored a thesis titled "Psyche in Heraclitus" in 2014. He has translated numerous books in the fields of philosophy, psychoanalysis, and analytical psychology (including authors such as Henri Bergson, Georges Canguilhem, Carl Gustav Jung, and Michel Foucault) and has served as a translation editor for many volumes.
Adem is currently a PhD candidate in Metaphysics and Philosophical Anthropology under the supervision of Herman Westerink and Gert-Jan van der Heiden.
His project fundamentally re-evaluates the nature of trauma, moving beyond its conventional perception as solely destructive to assert its constitutive aspect. The central inquiry guiding this research is: In what specific ways does trauma operate as a constitutive factor?
This question is systematically explored through an investigation into the constitution of defense mechanisms, which are hypothesized to be triggered by traumatic events. However, this research demonstrates that a comprehensive understanding of these processes is incomplete without a thorough examination of the sense of reality, a phenomenon which seems directly and intricately linked with the formation and function of these defense mechanisms.
This research will try to illuminate the developmental path from the genesis of trauma, through the constitution of defense mechanisms, to the formation of the sense of reality.
