Prof. Ton Coenen conducts neurophysiological research on the relation between brain activity and behaviour. He studies electric brain activity using EEG, mostly in animals, but also in humans. Coenen is particularly interested in all facets of the phenomenon of sleep: brain and sleep, the function of sleep, REM sleep and dreams, views on dreaming, sleep disorders, sleep disorder therapies, the cognitive differences and similarities between sleep and waking. He is also interested in abnormal brain states such as epilepsy, anaesthesia and coma.
