Daniel DeRock researches and teaches primarily on global political economy and global governance. His current research is divided into two themes, both of which engage with political ecology, global health, and critical disability studies. The first is the political economy of the climate-health nexus, with a focus on multilateral efforts (e.g., by the World Bank) to mitigate climate change-induced health risks. The second is the global political economy of neurodiversity. This latter theme focuses on processes of co-optation and financialization, labor market inequalities, and the agency of the neurodiversity movement.
His PhD (2022), from the University of Amsterdam, was titled "The Politics of Global Statistical Harmonization." The PhD research investigated the ways that international organizations make the world legible through quantitative indicators like GDP and poverty rates, and analyzed the diffusion of macroeconomic measurement practices around the world.
