Ming Ebbinkhuijsen is a lecturer Communication Science and PhD candidate in the Communication and Media group at the Behavioural Science Institute. Her main research interests involve journalism and news, targeted at children in the age of 8-13 years old.
Together with Prof. Dr. Moniek Buijzen (promotor) and Dr. Mariska Kleemans (co-promotor) she is working on the project titled: Investigating Coping Strategies and News Avoidance: Developing an Intervention to Empower Children in Coping with Negative News. Children (8-13 years old) are vulnerable for negative effects of news exposure (e.g., negative emotions, anxiety-related behaviors and concerns are raised for news avoidance). However, coping with these negative consequences and news avoidance need more research attention. This project aims to (1) expose processes of children’s coping strategies and news avoidance, and (2) empower children in coping with negative news to reduce the negative emotional effects and diminish news avoidance.
