Mette Gieskes (Ph.D University of Texas at Austin, 2007) is Assistant Professor of Modern and Contemporary Art History at Radboud University. Her research interests include the intersection of art and music; systems, chance, and game structures in art of the 1950s, 1960s, and 1970s; and humor in contemporary art from a global perspective. She has published essays on the work of artists such as Otobong Nkanga, Simon Hantaï, Francis Alÿs, Sol LeWitt, Philip Guston, and Tamara Muller. She has advised two Ph.D-projects to completion and is now co-advising three other Ph.D-candidates, with subjects ranging from surrealist automatism and the conservation of Donald Judd’s metal works to art and design in the digital age and the impact of migratory experiences on the work of contemporary, female artists of Middle Eastern descent. Gieskes is co-editor, with Mathilde Roza, of Retrospection and Revision in Modern and Contemporary Art, Literature and Music (Palgrave Macmillan, 2023). She is also co-editor, with Gregory H. Williams, of Humor in Global Contemporary Art (Bloomsbury 2024). She is currently researching the work of Dutch performance and sound artist Moniek Toebosch.
