J.F. Hübotter (Justus) MSc

Hi, I’m Justus, a PhD student at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour in the Artificial Intelligence department under the supervision of Dr Serge Thill, Dr Pablo Lanillos, and Prof. Marcel van Gerven. Previously, I studied MSc Neuroscience and MSc Artificial intelligence in Amsterdam. I am specifically intrigued by understanding the brain as a complex dynamic network, combining key ideas from connectionism (understanding the brain via neural networks) and dynamicism (understanding cognition via differential equations), and applying these principles in computational models. Currently, I try to combine my research interests from both fields by developing spiking neural networks for robotic control via deep active inference as part of the SPIKEFERENCE project. In particular, I am interested how generative models can be learned by populations of spiking neurons for basic sensory-motor cognition. As my work is related to the Human Brain Project, I am excited about the prospect of experimenting with implementations in neuromorphic hardware. I hope that this next generation of neuroscience-inspired artificial intelligence may someday provide energy-efficient and therefore sustainable solutions and applications related to model-based reinforcement learning in the real world as well as insights into human cognition.
