- Water Management in Mamluk Cairo
- Source of Life
- 2020 - 2024 My PhD project deals with the study of water management in Mamluk Cairo (1250-1517) with a particular focus on documentary sources such as endowments (ar: waqf). Being an expanding city with a growing population and a complex political system, Mamluk Cairo represents a most interesting case for the study of the social dynamics characterizing the urban environment of the Medieval Islamic world. Through the study of water management and supply, my aim is to grasp the nature of the interactions between the various social components of the Sultanate’s capital city. Besides waqf documents, I intend to analyse in detail a wide range of literary sources (historical sources, travel reports and market inspectors’ manuals). Moreover, the analysis will be extended to the study of extant inscriptions and monuments related to water supply (such as cisterns, public fountains, baths, etc.) in order to understand the topographical distribution of these structures within the city.
