Throughout my research, I have been trying to integrate findings from the peer relationship literature into bullying prevention and classroom management. Based on my experience as a teacher, researcher, and consultant, I have investigated the impact of social context on the lives of children, especially those from disadvantaged and under-represented backgrounds. Inspired mainly by ecological system theory (Bronfenbrenner, 2001), I have researched underlying mechanisms of peer ecology (Gest & Rodkin, 2011) using social network analysis.Onderzoeksthema

- 2021 - 2023 Peer Community as a Critical Construct in Child and Adolescent Development: Peer community, which is characterized by trust and social bonding among classmates, has a critical impact in child and adolescent development. However, the construct of peer community has been relatively understudied in the literature. This research project aims to systematically address four questions regarding this developmental construct: (1) How is the construct of peer community conceptualized? (2) How can it be measured? (3) What are the developmental consequences associated with a positive or negative sense of peer community? (4) How can peer community be improved? These four research questions will be addressed by analyzing several large data sets collected in South Korea and The Netherlands. Together, this project will shed light on an important developmental construct from multiple perspectives.
