I am an assistant professor in the field of gender and diversity in AI, with a background in psychology and gender theory. My research focuses on the sociocultural embeddedness of science and technology. I am specifically interested in how ideas about sex and gender are taken up, enacted, and (re)produced in neuroscience, biomedicine, clinical psychology, and AI.

2024 - "AI for women’s health? Troubling categories of sex and gender in medical machine learning." Women’s health advocates hope that artificial intelligence (AI) can advance our understanding of sex/gender health disparities, since medical research has historically focused on men. However, we lack deep insight into how AI techniques may either reify or destabilize human categories. This limits our understanding of how medical AI may impact conceptualizations of sex and gender, and by extension social equality, in and beyond medicine. To fill this gap, this project draws on feminist Science and Technology Studies to ask: how are categories and facts pertaining to sex and gender constructed and legitimized through the use of medical AI? 2024 - 2028 Doing Gender Studies amidst changing political climates. This is a PhD project by Robyn Ausmeier that I supervise together with prof. Marieke van den Brink and dr. Ea Utoft. It focuses on the experiences of Gender Studies scholars working amidst changing political climates in the Netherlands, exploring how these scholars navigate and resist the ongoing pushback against critical feminist work.
