- 2016 - 2018 Key staff member EXPULCIT, Erasmus+ project. EXPULCIT seeks to generate knowledge on the topical issue of expulsion of EU citizens and promote debate among academics, practitioners, and civil society concerning the meaning of expulsion practices in the context of EU citizenship. From the perspective of the general theory of citizenship, this aspect of EU citizenship is highly problematic since it is generally understood that international and human rights law do not allow states to expel their own nationals. This state of affairs raises a series of normative and empirical questions around the meaning of expulsion, the legal rules applicable (international, EU, national and their interactions), their interpretation and application and not least, their impact on affected EU citizens and their family members. The project involves organizing 3 international events and several publications. Meer informatie
- 2015 - 2018 Key staff member, CMR’s Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence programme, Erasmus+ project. The main objectives of this 3-year project are to promote excellence in teaching and research in EU studies and improve the quality of professional training on EU subjects. It focuses on EU citizenship on one hand, and migration and asylum law, on the other, in order to understand the differentiation and convergence between these two areas. The working programme includes research, development of new teaching, organizing a series of workshops on new migration and asylum law instruments as well as publications. I am part of the core team responsible for the overall implementation of this project. I also coordinate and teach in a newly developed summer course on citizenship and migration in the EU which is part of the Radboud Summer School. My research activities focus on monitoring the implementation of Directive 2004/38 at Member State level. Meer informatie
- 2011 - 2013 EU expert for the Network on Free Movement of Workers within the European Union. The European network on free movement of workers within the European Union was coordinated by the Centre for Migration Law (under the European Commission's supervision) from 2004 to 2013. Its main tasks included: a) keep track of legislation on free movement of workers and how it is applied; b) monitor how national courts interpret EU laws; and c) raise awareness of the importance of free movement of workers as a fundamental right. The project involved the coordination of 27 (in 2013, 28) national reports on developments regarding the freedom of movement of EU workers in individual Member States, the writing of an annual European report and the organization of an annual conference.
- 2008 - 2011 PhD Researcher, ENACT: Enacting European Union Citizenship. ENACT looked at how European citizenship is claimed, disputed, built - in short, enacted. It proposed an original way of analyzing EU citizenship: instead of focusing on citizenship as legal status or practice, the project was concerned with how subjects constitute themselves as EU citizens and highlighted the ways in which the scope, content and perception of European citizenship is shaped by the complex ways in which citizenship is enacted, within, across and beyond member states. My research focused on state acts of citizenship deprivation in a selection of EU member States from the perspective of people’s struggles around membership and nationality and led to my first monograph, Contingent Citizenship (Brill: Martinus Nijhoff, 2015). - 2018 - 2021 Key staff member, CIMIS (Citizenship.Migration. Security) Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence programme, Erasmus+ project. CIMIS aims to foster better knowledge and understanding of the Europeanization of citizenship, migration, asylum and security in relation to a) teaching and research and b) the quality of professional training on EU subjects. CIMIS examines how the interplay between migration and security shapes the legal landscape of EU migration law and the rights and experiences of those subjected to these laws: nationals, EU citizens, migrants, asylum seekers, travellers etc. Meer informatie
