Karin Roelofs is Professor of Experimental Psychopathology at Radboud University and chair of the Affective Neuroscience Group at the Donders Institute (DI): Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging (DCCN) and the Behavioural Science Institute (BSI).
Her research focuses on the neurocognitive mechanisms underlying stress-resilience and vulnerability. Together with her group, she employs a range of neuroimaging techniques (fMRI, MEG), combined with neuromodulation (e.g., transcranial ultrasound stimulation) or pharmacological interventions, to study emotional control and decision-making processes. Her work investigates defensive stress responses in neurotypical individuals, clinical populations (e.g., anxiety disorders), and longitudinal cohorts of typically developing and at-risk groups (e.g., a large police cohort from the Police-In-Action (PIA) study).
Important research questions are: How do people regulate their emotional actions? What is the role of autonomic balance on decision making under threat? Why do some individuals develop symptoms after adverse events and others not? Can we improve emotion control using neuromodulation or closed-loop biofeedback trainings? Answering these questions will eventually lead to increased insight into stress-related disorders and promote their early detection and treatment.
Karin Roelofs is a member of the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and board member of all European Academies (ALLEA).
She received several European grants for her research (an ERC-starting 2012, ERC-consolidator 2018, and an ERC-advanced grant 2025, as well as several collaborative Fp7 and Horizon2020 grants). In addition, she received various national grants from the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO), including personal (VENI, VIDI, VICI) and collaborative (SSH-open competition, NWO-Crossover, NWA-ORC and Brain & Cognition) grants. Furthermore, she is a registered GZ psychologist (BIG).
