John Schermer is a specialist in crystal growth from the gas phase and subsequent device processing. He is responsible for the acquisition and management of research projects, guidance of PhD students and lecturing courses on materials science, wave optics and sustainable energy. His research group focusses on III-V semiconductor technology and the development of high-efficiency thin-film solar cells for applications such as spacecraft and light concentrator systems.
John has acquired and executed more than 35 (inter)national research projects resulting in state-of-the-art research laboratories with clean rooms as well as in- and outdoor PV calibration facilities. His research group has forwarded multiple solar cells with acknowledged world record efficiencies and four start-up companies that John is involved with as independent unpaid scientific advisor. Besides cooperation projects with other academic groups, he also established long term collaboration with a large number of industrial partners and research institutes such as Airbus, LG Electronics, TNO, Solliance, Circadian Solar, Umicore, SunCycle, Frauenhofer-ISE, Azur Space and ESA.
