I recently began my PhD studies in Bimodal Hearing. It encapsulates studies in people who have a cochlear implant in one ear and a hearing aid in the other. Bilateral cochlear implantation is highly expensive and not everyone is entitled to get bilaterally implanted yet. Therefore bimodal hearing is an effective approach to the problem of hearing loss. Sound localisation and speech perception studies will lay foundation of the research. Coding strategies in the hearing prosthesis and their coupling with the hearing aid will be investigated with regular feedback from the users. While the Cochlear Implants function on electric stimulation of the ear whereas hearing aids are based on acoustic and i.e. more natural stimulation of the ear. Therefore bimodal hearing having electric and acoustic stimulation posses a potential to tap lower frequency content of the sound. This is however not yet possible in the case of bilateral cochlear implants where the stimulation is purely electrical.
