My PhD research project studies the transnational dynamics implicit in the diffusion and contestation of transgender rights norms in two distinctive domestic contexts: Cuba and the Netherlands. It is conceived as a contribution to the constructivists scholarship of norm diffusion in International Relations. The project asks how local and transnational actor constellations interact with states’ identities and interests, and how this interaction is embedded in the assemblages and transformations of contesting transgender rights norms; namely, the trans* medical norm, and the trans* human rights norm.
