Nicholas Sy MA (1988) is assistant professor at the Department of History, University of the Philippines Diliman where he teaches Philippine history and Asian history. Currently on study leave, he is now based at Radboud University where his is writing his dissertation entitled “Fraying the social fabric: The afterlives of slavery in Luzon at the Spanish Empire’s Asian frontier,” under the supervision of Prof.dr. Jan Kok and dr. Dries Lyna—a project that combines cultural, social, and demographic history approaches to describe an intertwining of colonial and local forms of slavery. This dissertation is an Early Modern history of Indian Ocean encounters in an archipelago that would come to be known as the Philippines, a vital link connecting Indian, Pacific, and Atlantic histories of slavery.
