Post Doctoral Researcher - Donders Centre for Neuroscience
Post Doctoral Researcher - Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour
VENI laureate Dr. Monique van der Voet is senior researcher at the research labs for
1) Drosophila Models of Brain Disorders and
2) Genetics of Brain Function and (Psychiatric) Malfunction.
With my research line I address the genetics of neurodevelopmental disorders with the aim to gain mechanistic insight that will aid disease prevention and treatment. I tackle the genetic complexity of polygenic disorders by utilizing the manageable model organism Drosophila melanogaster (fruit fly), with which I have pioneered the dissection of cellular processes and system-level neuroscience of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)-associated genes.
I’m currently working on my vision to address in Drosophila how low-level cellular stress exerts neuroprotective properties through hormesis. This research will have implications for a broad range of disorders, from intellectual disability, schizophrenia, ADHD, to neurodegeneration.
