Housing

Nijmegen is a green and spacious city with a range of housing options. If you are coming from abroad for an extended period and want to arrange housing before your arrival, the most practical solution is to rent an apartment or (part of a) house. Below you will find an overview of the most practical options. Your employer may also be able to assist you with your search before your arrival.

The Guesthouse
The Guesthouse, which is intended for new staff, guest researchers and guest lecturers from the Netherlands and abroad and particularly suitable for international guest researchers and lecturers, is situated on campus on the Heyendaalseweg (Platolaan). It forms part of a larger residential complex, built in close consultation with the University. The Guesthouse comprises 71 modern flats for temporary occupancy (maximum one year). The University and Radboudumc are jointly responsible for letting the flats.

Rentals
In Nijmegen you can rent a room in a private house and through accommodation offices. A list with names and addresses of accommodation offices and websites is available here (pdf, 80 kB). If you are not satisfied with your accommodation upon arrival, you may decide to place an advertisement in the local newspaper (de Gelderlander, http://www.gelderlander.nl/, only in Dutch) or in VOX, the University magazine (only in Dutch).

There is also a website specializing in finding housing for expatriates in the Netherlands: http://www.quwest.com/

Commercial Housing Agencies
In Nijmegen there are commercial real estate agencies that can offer help in your search for temporary housing. They will require a registration fee and mainly offer unfurnished accommodation in apartments and houses.

Procedure:
You may send a request for accommodation by e-mail to housing@io.ru.nl. The housing department will send you an application form which you will then need to send back to the International Office as early as possible (preferably eight weeks before you start).

Most rooms are located within a few kilometres from the university, and can easily be reached by bus or bicycle. The rooms Dutch students leave behind are furnished, but in most cases you must provide your own bed linen, pillow, blankets, towels, etc. A furnished room with shared kitchen, toilet and shower facilities will cost you up to approximately €400 rent a month. The number of vacancies is extremely limited, and rooms are hard to find.

Rent starts on the 1st or 16th of every month, so your rent is due starting from these dates, even if you arrive a few days later. One month's rent must be paid in advance as a deposit. The deposit will be returned to you at the end of your stay if the room is found to be in a satisfactory state, and all (telephone) bills have been paid.

You are responsible for the rent during the period you indicated on the form, starting from the 1st or 16th of the month. You will have to check in on the exact day you mentioned on your application form. If you fail to do so, you will be charged with the possible loss of rent, your reservation will be cancelled, and we cannot guarantee other accommodation.
