Radboud University organisational structure

The PhD Organisation Nijmegen represents PhD candidates in several ways. To explain how we work, we will give you an overview of the organisational structure of the Radboud University in general and external organisations.

The Radboud University is run by a Board of Directors/Governors who discuss, design and evaluate the policy of the Radboud University.

In the Netherlands, all universities have a council where students and employees come together to discuss, advise and approve a wide range of topics regarding university policy. The Radboud University has a Student Council (Universitaire Studentenraad, USR) and a Works Council (Ondernemingsraad, OR). The students and employees can vote on candidates for the Councils to represent their interests. The Radboudumc has a separate UMC Works Council.

The Radboud University has several faculties. Faculties are divided according to scientific knowledge areas. Within a faculty, several research institutes were founded to unite departments within this faculty dealing with similar scientific studies and subjects. Research Institutes are based on subject content of research areas. Every PhD candidate is a member of one or two Research Institutes, with one as main Research Institute. Every Research Institute has a PhD Council to represent interests of PhD candidates within that institute. The council advises the Board of Directors of this institute about matters concerning PhD policy, and to organise seminars, courses and several other educational and social activities. PON meets every six weeks with the PhD Councils of all Research Institutes at the Radboud University to inform and be informed about PhD interests.

Through the Works Council and PhD Councils, PON tries to unite policies and provide information concerning PhD projects at the Radboud University. Besides input to PhD policies within our own university, PON informs and gets informed by the national PhD Network of the Netherlands (PNN) and the international PhD network EuroDoc. This means that PON represents PhD candidates at a "higher" level (namely regional, national and international).
