Programme of Particle and Astrophysics
The master specialisation Particle and Astrophysics consists of
A. | Particle and Astrophysics, mandatory courses | 15 EC |
B. | Particle and Astrophysics, elective courses | 25 EC |
C. | Master Thesis Physics and Astronomy | 60 EC |
D. | Professional Preparation | 1 EC |
E. | Philosophy | 3 EC |
F. | Free electives | 16 EC |
Note: In order to create a coherent programme that prepares you for a Master's thesis contact the coordinator of your field of interest with the first few weeks of enrollment:
High Energy Physics: Dr S. Caron
Astrophysics: Dr S.S. Larsen / Dr O. Pols
A. Mandatory Programme (15 EC)
Common courses of the Particle and Astrophysics specialisation:
First Semester | Second Semester |
Cosmology (9 EC) | Student Seminar Particle and Astrophysics (3 EC) |
Electrodynamics (3 EC) (1st Quarter) |
B. Particle and Astrophysics Electives (25 EC)
Elective courses should be chosen in consultation with the prospective supervisor or the coordinator of the master specialisation. Note that the selected electives should add up to a minimum total of 25 EC.
Depending on your field of interest, the following courses are highly recommended:
Astrophysics | Experimental High-Energy Physics | Theoretical Physics: High Energy |
Theoretical Physics: Quantum Gravity |
---|---|---|---|
Astroparticle Physics | Particle Physics Phenomenology | Quantum Field Theory | General Relativity |
Telescope Observing | Particle Detection and Acceleration | Theoretical Foundations of Elementary Particle Physics | Quantum Field Theory |
All Particle and Astrophysics elective courses taught in 2016/2017 are found here.
C. Master Thesis Physics and Astronomy (60 EC)
D. Professional Preparation (1 EC)
E. Philosophy course (3 EC)
F. Free electives (16 EC)
-
Free electives can be chosen from other master specialisations or programmes, not necessarily within Physics and Astronomy. Of these free electives, 10 EC have to be approved by the Examination Board.
