Programme of B1

The Bachelor's programme is comprised of three years of 60 credits (ec). Each year is divided into four periods (quarters) of 15 ec.

First-year courses lay the foundation in knowledge and skills for all areas of the Bachelor's programme. The first year, however, also serves as a filter: if you are able to pass all first year courses, you should be able to handle the rest of the programme as well. If you fail to pass at least 39 ec in the first year, you cannot continue the programme (See the appropriate section on Binding Study Advice in this prospectus).

The first-year courses for each period are listed below, with the study load shown in parentheses (ec). The first year has a fully mandatory curriculum. Period 1-3 are the same for the Chemistry and Molecular Life Sciences programmes. The Science programme varies slightly each period. At the end of the third period you can still transfer between the programmes without any time loss.  If you have completed all your courses you can apply for your Propedeuse certificate.

*Mechanica 1B (partly in Dutch)
The mechanics course is offered in two levels. Standard level is Mechanics 1A.
Science students can choose to work towards an exam on a more abstract and mathematical level: Mechanica 1B. This course prepares for the Physics follow-up course NP036 Rotaties en Periodieke Bewegingen in the second period.
Chemistry students and MLS students with good grades in Physics and Mathematics (7 or higher in school, good score in first week's diagnostic tests) may also choose this level.

In Mechanica 1B you follow the same lectures as 1A (in English), but take more advanced tutorials with extra instruction on the physics level (in Dutch).

**Academic skills
The course Academic Skills will run throughout the entire Bachelor’s programme. You will complete this at the end of the third year and then receive 3 EC. See the course description in this prospectus.

The first year is concluded with the End-of-year symposium dealing with presentation and career orientation. During this symposium the results of the projects from the fourth quarter are presented. In addition, speakers with a science-based education will give a lecture about their career and current work.
Students prepare for the symposium by performing a field orientation, searching for interesting speakers and inviting them. This activity is part of the course Academic Skills (MOL086). Attendance at the symposium is mandatory.
