Honours Programme

FNWI Honours Academy

The faculty of Science has a two year Honours programme which takes place in the second and third year of the Bachelor programme. Each year a maximum of 25 students are accepted. Students from all faculty of Science programmes can apply. It is a challenging and interesting programme that requires extra effort on your part, but gives you a lot in return. You can apply for a spot in the faculty honours programme until the end of May in your first year (check our website for more details). The selection takes place on the basis of your study results and an interview on your ambition and motivation. Each year the programme starts with 3 orientation days in the final week of August. These days serve as a way of getting to know each other and the mentors (researchers and teachers from the faculty). Groups consisting of students from different science programmes will be formed (each group is 4/5 students) during these orientation days. In the second year of their Bachelor the groups will work on a theme which coincides with multiple disciplines (you will look beyond your own discipline) and societal aspects under the guidance of a mentor. The final product of this group will be a research proposal which fits the chosen theme. During this year you will also receive training on academic skills, such as presenting, working in groups, and debating, which will be beneficial after the Honours programme as well. A visit to a foreign top university ( e.g. Oxford, Cambridge, Berlin, Zürich) also takes place in the first year of the programme. The first year concludes with a symposium where all groups present their research proposal and are questioned by an external jury.

In the second year of the Honours programme (the third year of the Bachelor programme) you will work individually under guidance of a master (a senior researcher from within or outside the faculty) on a research topic of your own choosing. Normally you combine this research with your Bachelor internship/thesis which can result in a research of sizeable proportion. A component of the second year of the Honours programme is a stay abroad which you will choose together with your master. Training and progress meetings are held several times throughout this year. After completing the second year of the programme there will be a festive final event with friends, family, and peers, where you will give a final presentation and receive your Honours programme diploma.

The programme encompasses 30 EC.
