Your stay abroad: the adventure begins
Time to go
The time has come for your adventure abroad to begin! You are finally ready to make the most out of your country of destination, and to have a great time. Remember, no matter what happens, all experience is worth having! But what should you do in case of a calamity abroad? It goes without saying that we hope that everything goes smoothly, but if you do encounter a calamity, it is good to know what to do.
Here are some suggestions and tips:
What to have with you at all times: Overview of important information and copies of official documents!
Remember to bring along an overview, both digital and on paper, of important contact information, as well as copies of your passport and travel insurance. Also make sure you leave a copy of these documents with your contact person back home!
You may accidentally lose your ID, laptop or mobile phone, or you may find yourself in an area without Internet (if only temporarily). Remember to have the following with you at all times:
- Copies of official documents, such as your passport
- Travel insurance
- Telephone numbers of contact persons both at home and at your host institution, local embassy or consulate, insurance company and bank
- Blood group and other medical information
Unrest may develop in your country of destination, or some other calamity may occur. We have put together a list of tips and guidelines for such an eventuality. You can have a look at this list by clicking on the link above.
Also good to know: In preparation for the eventuality of an international calamity that might involve Radboud students and/or researchers and their family members, we have drawn up an internal roadmap to quickly organise aid operations and to provide all parties involved with detailed and relevant information. This roadmap is activated as soon as a report concerning an international calamity has been received through the calamity telephone number. The calamity telephone number is + 31 24 3619000.
What to do in case of a calamity in the Netherlands or in your home country?
If during your absence a calamity occurs in the Netherlands or in your home country, you will have to ask yourself a number of questions. For instance, is it necessary or desirable for you to come back (temporarily or definitively)?
Should the answer be yes, we advise you to always contact your faculty coordinator at Radboud University. Before you leave, you should also always consult your health insurance provider, so as to avoid unpleasant surprises later! And make sure you inform your contact person at the host university.
