Intercultural awareness within education
Do you teach students from other countries? Do you work together with international colleagues? Is the answer yes? Then a course Intercultural awareness for education might just be perfect for you.
Directly addressing a student or a colleague or expecting the other to show self-initiave, could be counterproductive. This can cause a decrease in learning efficiency and a less safe learning environment.
The importance we attach to for instance appointments, time, relations, feedback and independence can differ widely as well. These differences may cause miscommunication and misunderstanding, annoyance and sometimes even downright conflict.
What is the target group of the Intercultural Awareness course?
Professionals who work in an international education setting.
What is Intercultural Awareness?
Intercultural awareness is the first step to effective intercultural communication and successful teaching in the international classroom.
The central question regarding intercultural awareness is: what can we do to make things easier for ourselves and others? Intercultural awareness provides you with insights into the different dimensions of culture from a diverse theoretical framework. You recognise the similarities and differences and become aware of your own culture in relation to other cultures. You know what the impact of culture is and you are aware of your own behaviour and its effects. This way you learn to consider the cultural values of others and you gain insight into how to interact and communicate with colleagues and students from other cultures more effectively. You improve your intercultural skills, causing the interaction to be smoother and more relaxed. In other words, fewer instances of miscommunication or misunderstanding, but rather an increase in mutual understanding and connection.
