Inclusive communication

People differ from one another. There are not only differences when it comes to the language that they speak and their ethnic, cultural and religious background, but also when it comes to their age, gender, sexual orientation, social class, and mental or physical condition. More and more organisations are striving to create a culture in which everyone can feel seen, heard and valued. This requires intercultural competence, which involves the ability to successfully deal with all these differences between people.

The Inclusive Communication Training Course will increase your awareness of inclusiveness and will provide you with the insights and tools that will help you to communicate more inclusively.
The training consists of three sessions, all three taking place on the Radboud University campus.

Good news! You can get a STAP budget for this course. More information on the budget and how to apply for it is available here.

Session 1: Introduction to inclusiveness

What is inclusion and what are its key aspects? During this session, you will be introduced to the diversity cycle and the various aspects of diversity. We will reflect on cultural awareness and the six skills that are required for inclusive communication. In this module, you will experience the impact of your own assumptions and behaviour within a diverse, intercultural organisation. You will learn about the situations in which diversity can play a role and gain a deeper understanding of cultural impact. By the end of this session, you will have a set of practical tools, ideas, measures and other means that you will be able to implement as soon as you are back at work.

This session will last three hours and will be held on Wednesday, 10 May from 13.00 pm to 16.00 pm.

Session 2: Providing inclusive feedback

Tijdens deze sessie staan we stil bij onbewuste vooroordelen;

During this session, we will reflect on unconscious biases;
What are they, how do they influence your view of others and how do they effect mutual interaction? You will also gain insight into different intercultural strategies that pertain to feedback. This will ensure that you are able to interpret feedback correctly and adapt your own feedback to the recipient. In turn, this will enable you to provide appropriate feedback to a culturally diverse team or working group in a way that will benefit everyone.

This session will last three hours and will be held on Wednesday, 17 May from 13.00 pm to 16.00 pm.

Session 3: Inclusive language

Language can exclude people, but it can also make them feel included. If you want everyone to feel addressed and you want your message to really get through, it is vital that you use inclusive language. This is language that treats people equally, that does not distinguish between he/she/them, or a person’s skin colour, religion, level of education, skills, disabilities or lots of other things that are irrelevant.

This workshop will teach you about the pitfalls and what you will need to take into account in order to ensure that your text does not exclude people.

This session will last three hours and will be held on Wednesday, 24 May from 13.00 pm to 15.00 pm.
