Social Dutch IV course
Do you already speak Dutch well in social situations, but want to further improve your Dutch language skills so that you can talk to your fellow students or friends about your study, internship, travel, etc.? Do you want to be able to give your opinion on a variety of topics or express how you feel in a variety of situations? Do you want to expand your vocabulary, practice communication skills, and also learn something about what is typically Dutch? In that case, take the Social Dutch IV course.
Social Dutch IV is offered for FREE to all Radboud University international students and staff who meet the conditions.**
What will this course bring you?
The main objective of these courses is to learn to communicate in Dutch. All skills are developed: speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
More attention than in the Social Dutch-courses I to Social Dutch III is given to such matters as grammar, vocabulary and pronunciation. Reading and writing skills are mostly practiced in the time allotted for self-study.
After this course, you will be able to:
- talk about your academic career;
- talk about your wishes for your career or education;
- report information you have heard or read;
- explain the differences between options;
- explain the pros and cons of different options;
- talk about the travelling you have done;
- respond appropriately to good or bad news (for yourself or the other person);
- reassure someone;
- formulate advice;
- ask for an opinion and give your opinion;
- summarise extensive or complicated information in a comprehensible way.
Grammar is always covered in a communication context and for functional purposes.
Example: When you learn to formulate advice, you will also learn about the use of the construction “ik zou...” as knowledge about this grammatical topic is useful and relevant at this level for formulating advice in a respectful way.
Culture and history influence the language of a country. That is why this course will also pay attention to interesting and relevant aspects of Dutch culture and history. Knowledge about these topics will make it easier to understand Dutch people and their responses.
Example:
How outspoken will a Dutch person be when you give them bad news? How normal is it in the Netherlands to show your emotions in the workplace or in a lecture? Do you have to wait for someone to ask for your opinion before giving it? How open are Dutch people about the type of education they’ve completed?
Level: from A2 to halfway to B1 (CEFR)
After the course, you will receive a certificate of attendance (provided you have attended at least 80% of the classes).
