Beyond Borders: How to Turn the Tide of Environmental Destruction? | Lecture by environmental social scientist Jennifer Telesca and political scientist Daniel DeRock (Lezing)

To stop climate change, who wouldn’t want that? The Netherlands, Europe, the UN and other international organizations are all preoccupied with climate policy. But why aren’t these policies effective at stopping climate change? Come and learn from environmental social scientist Jennifer Telesca and political scientist Daniel DeRock about how we can create climate policies that work.

Cross-border environmental problems

Despite climate agreements and alarming messages from scientists, natural disasters and climate change continue to intensify. An important cause for this is the fact that environmental problems don’t care about borders. Something that works for one country, may cause extra problems in another. For example, the building of dams in China to generate green energy has had disastrous consequences for fishing and agricultural areas in countries downstream. Countries are mainly interested in their own backyard, despite the consequences for others.

The importance of international collaboration

All this underlines the importance of international collaboration to solve environmental problems on a global scale. These problems only seem to get worse, despite the best efforts of a number of organizations specifically established to solve them. Why is it that, since the International Commission for the Conservation of Atlantic Tunas was established, the number of tuna has decreased? Are the agreements not clear enough? Which other interests play a part? And what is necessary to turn the tide toward a constructive collaboration?

Jennifer Telesca and Daniel DeRock will shed a light on where things are going wrong now, while looking into the hopeful possibilities for actual international collaboration. After their lectures, Jennifer Telesca and Daniel DeRock will discuss what is needed to achieve this, both from governments and civilians. Program manager Nort Vlemmix of Radboud Reflects moderates the conversation.

About the speakers

Jennifer Telesca is an environmental social scientist at Radboud University. She is the author of Red Gold; The Managed Extinction of the Giant Bluefin Tuna. Her work entails a critical approach to ocean studies and includes the interests of environmental diplomacy, ethnographies of international law in society, the human-animal relationship, political economy, the politics of distinction and science and technology in policymaking.

Daniel DeRock is a political scientist at Radboud University. He researches global economic and ecological governance, specifically by international organizations like the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund. His current research focuses on the global politics of climate change.

Een halt aan de klimaatverandering; wie wil dit nu niet? Nederland, Europa, de VN en andere internationale organisaties zijn allemaal druk met milieubeleid. Waarom lukt het dan toch niet om de klimaatcrisis te stoppen? Kom en denk verder met sociaal milieuwetenschapper Jennifer Telesca en politicoloog Daniel DeRock over hoe we milieubeleid kunnen maken dat wel werkt.

Grensoverschrijdende milieuproblemen

Ondanks de klimaatakkoorden en alarmerende berichten van wetenschappers, blijven natuurrampen en klimaatverandering wereldwijd toenemen. Een belangrijke reden hiervoor is dat milieuproblemen zich weinig aantrekken van landsgrenzen. Wat voor het ene land werkt, kan juist extra problemen veroorzaken voor het andere land. Zo heeft de bouw van stuwdammen voor groene energie in China desastreuze gevolgen gehad op het gebied van visserij en landbouw voor stroomafwaarts gelegen landen. Landen lijken voornamelijk geïnteresseerd in hun eigen achtertuin, met alle gevolgen van dien.

Het belang van internationale samenwerking

Dit onderstreept het belang van internationale samenwerking om milieuproblemen op wereldwijde schaal op te lossen. Maar waarom lijken deze problemen alleen maar te verergeren, ondanks de inzet van verschillende organisaties die specifiek hiervoor zijn opgericht? Waarom is sinds de oprichting van de Internationale Commissie voor de instandhouding van Atlantische Tonijn de hoeveelheid tonijn juist enorm afgenomen? Zijn de afspraken niet helder genoeg? Welke andere belangen spelen een rol? En wat is ervoor nodig om het tij te keren en te komen tot constructieve samenwerking?

Jennifer Telesca en Daniel DeRock vertellen waar het precies misgaat en ze gaan tegelijkertijd in op hoopvolle mogelijkheden voor echte internationale samenwerking. Na afloop van hun lezingen gaan zij met elkaar in gesprek over wat hiervoor nodig is vanuit zowel overheden als burgers. Daarnaast is er alle ruimte om ook je eigen vragen te stellen. Programmamaker Nort Vlemmix leidt het gesprek.

Over de sprekers

Jennifer Telesca is sociaal milieuwetenschapper aan de Radboud Universiteit. Zij is de auteur van Red Gold; The Managed Extinction of the Giant Bluefin Tuna. Haar werk is een kritische benadering van oceaanstudies en omvat de belangen van milieudiplomatie, etnografieën van internationaal recht in de samenleving, de relatie mens-dier, politieke economie, de politiek van uitsterven, en wetenschap en technologie in beleidsvorming.

Daniel DeRock is politicoloog aan de Radboud Universiteit. Hij doet onderzoek naar mondiaal economisch en ecologisch bestuur, met name door internationale organisaties als de Wereldbank en het Internationaal Monetair Fonds. Zijn huidige onderzoek richt zich op de mondiale politieke economie van klimaatverandering.
