In the Horn of Africa, every 48 seconds someone dies of famine. Yet, this humanitarian disaster is barely highlighted by the media. Why is that? And which role do climate change, COVID and the war in Ukraine play when it comes to famine in Africa? Come and listen political scientist Haley Swedlund and human geographer Dawit Tesfay Haile and deepen your knowledge of this current affair.

Drought, Ukraine and COVID

The Horn of Africa is tortured by mass deaths of cattle due to drought. It is disastrous, because many people live of their cattle: for trade, but also for milk and meat. Many people no longer have provisions, and at the same time  food prices are high due to the war in Ukraine. NGO’s face the same problem: a lot of wheat and other aid goods were imported from Russia and Ukraine and have increased in price.

Political unwillingness

Recently, NGO’s made an urgent appeal to the G7 and the West to make the necessary 4.4 billion dollars available. Only 2 percent of that amount is collected. According to NGO’s that money is available, but is not spent due to political unwillingness. The world produces enough food for everyone, they claim.

Haley Swedlund is associate professor International Relations at  Radboud University, specialised in Foreign Aid Diplomacy, Donor-Government Relations, Post-Conflict Peacebuilding, Qualitative Methods, Non-Governmental Actors.

Dawit Tesfay Haile is PhD candidate human geography at Radboud University.

Iedere 48 seconden sterft in de Hoorn van Afrika iemand aan ondervoeding. Toch is deze humanitaire ramp in onder meer Ethiopië, Kenia en Somalië nauwelijks in het nieuws. Hoe komt dat? En welke rol spelen de klimaatveranderingen, corona en de oorlog in Oekraïne bij de honger in Afrika? Kom luisteren naar politicoloog Haley Swedlund  en sociaal geograaf Dawit Tesfay Haileen verdiep je kennis van de actualiteit.

Droogte, Oekraïne en corona

De Hoorn van Afrika wordt geteisterd door een massale veesterfte als gevolg van droogte. En dat is desastreus, want veel mensen leven van hun vee: voor handel, maar ook voor melk en vlees. Veel mensen zijn door hun reserves heen, en tegelijkertijd stijgen de voedselprijzen door de oorlog in Oekraïne. Tegelijkertijd hebben hulporganisaties hetzelfde probleem: veel tarwe en andere hulpgoederen kwamen uit Rusland en de Oekraïne, en zijn veel duurder geworden.

Politieke onwil

Recent deden hulporganisaties een dringende oproep aan de G7 en het Westen om de benodigde 4,4 miljard dollar beschikbaar te stellen. Daarvan is nog slechts 2 procent bijeengebracht. Dat komt volgens hulporganisaties niet omdat het geld er niet is, maar het wijst op een gebrek aan politieke wil. De wereld, stellen zij, produceert voldoende voedsel om iedereen te voeden.

Pespectieven

Waarom is er in de media niet meer aandacht voor deze humanitaire ramp? Welke rol speelt de internationale politiek? En welk perspectief is er voor de toekomst? Programmamaker Liesbeth Jansen gaat over deze en aanverwante vragen in gesprek met religiewetenschapper Habtom Yohannes. Stel ook je eigen vragen!
