Meet the Cyborg | Big Ideas lecture with artist and cyborg-activist Neil Harbisson (Lezing)

Did you ever meet a cyborg? Now is your chance. Artist Neil Harbisson had always been unable to see colours, so in 2004 he had an antenna implanted in his head. Since then, he can not only hear colours, he also became officially recognised as a cyborg by the British government. Come and listen to Harbisson on what it means to be a cyborg and how he fights for cyborg rights; the right to self-design and to take an active part in one’s own biological revolution.

Transspecies

Neil Harbisson’s story is not just about extending his senses with technology. He also stretches our views on what humans are and can become. For Harbisson, being a cyborg means that he is technology. He identifies as transspecies, stating that he no longer feels 100% human. By engaging in this experiment, he creates new spaces in society and in the law. ‘The biggest challenge for cyborgs is to be socially accepted. Society needs to accept that there are people who wish to use technology as part of the body.’

Self-image

In this Big Ideas Lecture, Harbisson will take us along in what it means to be a cyborg and how, though experimentation, he pushes the boundaries of our self-image and imagination. Afterwards, there will be room for questions.

About the speaker

Neil Harbisson is a contemporary artist and cyborg activist. His artwork explores identity, human perception, the connection between sight and sound and the use of artistic expression via new sensory inputs. He is co-founder of the Cyborg Foundation that aims to help humans become cyborgs, defend cyborg rights and promote cyborg art. He also co-founded the Transpecies Society, an association that gives voice to people with non-human identities, defends the freedom of self-design and offers the creation of new senses and new organs in community.

In addition to the standard price of 10 euros, you can also opt for 12.50 euros and thus support the festival even more. Or you can opt for the reduced rate of 7 euros, if that suits you better.

Heb je ooit een cyborg ontmoet? Dit is je kans. Kunstenaar Neil Harbisson kon geen kleuren zien, daarom besloot hij in 2004 om een antenne op zijn hoofd te laten implanteren. Daardoor kan hij niet alleen kleuren horen, maar werd hij ook officieel als cyborg erkend door de Britse regering. Kom en hoor van Harbisson wat het betekent om een cyborg te zijn en hoe hij opkomt voor cyborg rechten; het recht om je zelf vorm te geven zoals je wilt en om actief in te grijpen in je eigen biologische revolutie.

Trans-species

Harbisson’s verhaal gaat niet alleen om het uitbreiden van zijn zintuigen door technologie. Hij rekt ook ons idee van wat het is om mens te zijn op. Voor Harbisson betekent cyborg zijn, dat hi technologie is. Hij identificeert zich als trans-species. Hij voelt zich niet langer 100% mens. Door dit experiment aan te gaan creëert hij nieuwe ruimtes in de maatschappij en de wet. ‘De grootste uitdaging voor cyborgs is sociale acceptatie. De maatschappij moet leren accepteren dat er personen zijn die technologie zien als onderdeel van hun lichaam.’

Zelfbeeld

In deze Big Idea Lezing laat Harbisson ons zien wat het betekent om cyborg te zijn. En hoe hij, door experimenten, de grenzen van ons zelfbeeld oprekt. Na zijn lezing is er ruimte voor vragen uit de zaal.

Over de spreker

Neil Harbisson is een hedendaagse kunstenaar en cyborg activist. In zijn kunst onderzoekt hij identiteit, menselijke perceptie, de connectie tussen zicht en geluid en het gebruik van artistieke expressie via nieuwe zintuigelijke input. Hij is medeoprichter van de Cyborg Foundation, waarmee ze mensen die cyborg willen worden proberen te helpen en opkomen voor cyborg rechten. Hij is ook medeoprichter van de Transpecies Society,  een organisatie die personen met niet-menselijke identiteiten een stem geeft en opkomt voor de vrijheid van zelf-design.
