People’s decisions are constantly influenced by noise: the mood they are in, the time of day, whether they are hungry, the season or the temperature. What does this mean for the value of our judgements? How can we avoid the influence of noise? Listen to the famous Nobel Prize winner Daniel Kahneman via Skype and learn how to make a good judgement with as little noise as possible.

Wrong decisions

It is evident that having unconscious biases is undesirable. But does this also apply to noise? Noise is different from bias, but it can be just as dangerous. That is why it is important to gain more insight into why we are so susceptible to noise when making decisions. How can we deal with it properly. When is the disruption of a decision by noise actually wrong, and who determines that?

Noise

In some professions it is extra important to allow as little noise as possible. Consider, for example, judges. Doctors can also make very different diagnoses due to noise. This can have worrying consequences. We like to judge honestly. Is it possible to get to 0% noise, and should we pursue that? Or is it better to leave these judgements to robots?

After his lecture via Skype, Daniel Kahneman will talk to psychologist Daniël Wigboldus and cultural anthropologist Noelle Aarts about the differences between noise and bias. What is the danger of noise and how can we can deal with this? Program manager at Radboud Reflects Liesbeth Jansen moderates the conversation.

About the speakers

Daniel Kahneman is a psychologist and an important pioneer at the interface of psychology and economics. He is the author of the bestseller Thinking Fast and Slow, in which he describes the Dual Process Theory, which is well known among psychologists. In 2002 he won the Nobel Prize in Economics.

Daniël Wigboldus is chair of the Executive Board of Radboud University and professor of Social and Cultural Psychology.

Noelle Aarts is professor Socio-Ecological Interaction at Radboud University and affiliated to the Institute for Science in Society. Focusing on conversations between people in different contexts, she studies inter-human processes and communication for creating space for sustainable change.

Wat betekent dit voor de waarde van onze oordelen? Hoe kunnen we de beïnvloeding door ruis voorkomen? Verkeerde beslissingen

Van het fenomeen bias, waarbij we systematische onbewuste vooroordelen hebben, is het evident dat het ongewenst is. Maar geldt dit ook voor ruis? Ruis is iets anders dan bias, maar het kan even gevaarlijk zijn. Daarom is het belangrijk om meer inzicht te krijgen in waarom wij zo vatbaar zijn voor ruis bij het nemen van beslissingen, en hoe we hier goed mee om kunnen gaan. Wanneer is de verstoring van een beslissing door ruis eigenlijk verkeerd, en wie bepaalt dat?

Ruis

Bij sommige beroepen is het extra belangrijk om zo min mogelijk ruis toe te laten. Denk bijvoorbeeld aan rechters, maar ook artsen stellen zeer uiteenlopende diagnoses door ruis. Dit kan zorgwekkende gevolgen hebben. We willen graag zuiver oordelen. Is het mogelijk om tot 0% ruis te komen, en moeten we dat willen? Of kunnen we deze oordelen dan beter overlaten aan robots?

Na zijn lezing via Skype gaat Daniel Kahneman in gesprek met psycholoog Daniël Wigboldus en cultureel antropoloog Noelle Aarts over wat het verschil is tussen ruis en bias en wat het gevaar is van ruis en hoe we hiermee om kunnen gaan. Programmamaker Liesbeth Jansen leidt het gesprek.

Over de spreker

Daniel Kahneman is psycholoog en belangrijke pionier op het grensvlak van psychologie en economie. Hij is auteur van de bestseller Ons feilbare denken, waarin hij de onder psychologen welbekende Dual Process Theory beschrijft. In 2002 won hij de Nobelprijs voor de Economie.

Daniël Wigboldus is voorzitter van het College van bestuur van de Radboud Universiteit en hoogleraar Sociale- en cultuurpsychologie.

Noelle Aarts is hoogleraar Socio-ecologische interacties aan de Radboud Universiteit en verbonden aan het Institute for Science in Society. Ze doet onderzoek naar gesprekken tussen stakeholders met verschillende achtergronden en belangen bij complexe thema’s. In 2016 en 2017 werd ze door collega’s verkozen tot de meest inspirerende communicator van Nederland.
