Hoe functioneert een democratie in een etnisch en religieus divers land als Indonesië? Leer over de ervaringen van Indonesië van I Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja, de ambassadeur van Indonesië in Nederland.

Diversiteit

Indonesië is de grootste islamitische samenleving ter wereld en kent een paar honderd etnische groeperingen. Door het hele land worden meer dan 700 verschillende talen en dialecten gesproken. Een belangrijk voorbeeld dus wat betreft diversiteit en democratie.

Actualiteit

Na zijn lezing gaat I Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja in gesprek met filosoof Paul Bakker van de Radboud Universiteit over de actuele ontwikkelingen in Indonesië. Op dit moment vinden de gouverneursverkiezingen in Jakarta plaats, waarvan de christelijke Basuki Tjahaja de eerste ronde inmiddels heeft gewonnen. Begin november 2016 demonstreerden in Jakarta duizenden conservatieve moslims tegen de gouverneur, die de islam beledigd zou hebben.

Over de spreker

I Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja is sinds 17 februari 2016 ambassadeur van Indonesië in Nederland. Hij studeerde Sociale en politieke wetenschappen aan de Gadjah  Mada University in Yogyakarta  in Indonesië en aan University of Michigan in de Verenigde Staten. Naast zijn taak als ambassadeur is I Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja namens Indonesië vertegenwoordiger bij The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

Paul Bakker is hoogleraar Filosofie van de Middeleeuwen en de Renaissance aan de Radboud Universiteit en directeur van Radboud Reflects.

Diversity

In addition to being the largest Islamic society in the world, Indonesia boasts several hundred ethnic groups who speak over 700 languages and dialects. Because of this it is an important example of diversity and democracy.

Current affairs

After his lecture I Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja will discuss recent developments in Indonesian politics with philosopher Paul Bakker of Radboud University. At the moment Jakarta is in the midst of contested gubernatorial elections. The incumbent Christian candidate Basuki Tjahaja won the first round. Yet in early November 2016 thousands of conservative Muslims demonstrated in Jakarta against him, claiming he had insulted Islam.

I Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja was appointed Ambassador of Indonesia to The Netherlands on 17 February 2016. He studied social and political sciences at Gadjah Mada University in Yogyakarta in Indonesia and the University of Michigan in the United States. In addition to serving as ambassador to the Netherlands, I Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja represents Indonesia at The Organisation for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW).

Paul Bakker is professor of Medieval and Renaissance Philosophy at Radboud University and director of Radboud Reflects.
