De Bijbel vertelt het verhaal van de mens, beginnend in een tuin en eindigend in een stad. Het zijn verhalen van verschillende auteurs, geschreven in verschillende tijden en uiteenlopende genres. Van geschiedschrijving tot poëzie, van moreel advies tot spiritualiteit. Her en der vind je zelfs een paar grappen.

Invloed

De Bijbel is natuurlijk bij uitstek een religieus boek. Maar door haar centrale plaats in tweeduizend jaar Westerse cultuur vinden we overal invloeden van de belangrijkste bijbelverhalen: niet alleen in kunst en literatuur, maar ook in ons rechtssysteem en taalontwikkeling.

Kijken we anders naar de schilderijen van Van Gogh als we de parabel van De Zaaier kennen? Wat bedoelde graffiti kunstenaar Banksy met zijn Christ with Shopping Bags? En wist je dat veel spreekwoorden zijn afgeleid van bijbelteksten?

Nu de meeste mensen niet meer opgroeien met bijbelverhalen, ontgaat ons de diepgang van veel kunst en literatuur. Kom luisteren naar Maggi Dawn die ons geheugen opfrist en een nieuw perspectief op bijbelverhalen biedt.

Over de sprekers

Maggi Dawn doceert theologie en literatuur aan Yale University. Ze was verbonden aan University of Cambridge en is momenteel vice-decaan van Marquand Chapel. Ze begon haar carrière als zangeres en is auteur van boeken als The Writing on the Wall (2012), The Accidental Pelgrim (2011) en Like the Wideness of the Sea (2013).

Na haar lezing gaat Maggi Dawn in gesprek met theoloog Matthijs den Dulk. Hij is universitair docent Bronteksten van Jodendom en Christendom aan de Radboud Universiteit. Zijn onderzoek richt zich onder andere op racisme en etnische vooroordelen in bijbelteksten.

The Bible tells the story of the human race, beginning in a garden and ending in a city. Its stories are the work of so many different authors, in different genres and from different times. It is full of ancient history, good advice, deep spirituality, morality tales, poetry and even a few jokes.

The Bible is, of course, principally a religious book. But because of its central place in two millennia of Western culture, we find influences of Bible stories everywhere: in art and literature, but even in the development of our language and justice systems.

How did the parable of the sower influence Van Gogh’s paintings? What does the graffiti artist Banksy express through Christ with Shopping Bags? And did you know that many of our proverbs have been drawn from Bible texts?

Now that most people no longer grow up with a background knowledge of the Bible, we lose layers of meaning in art and literature. Come and listen to Maggi Dawn refreshing our memories and offering us a new perspective on Bible stories.

About the speakers

Maggi Dawn teaches Theology and Literature at Yale University. She held a position at the University of Cambridge and is currently Associate Dean for Marquand Chapel. She started her career as a singer and has published among others The Writing on the Wall (2012), The Accidental Pelgrim (2011) and Like the Wideness of the Sea (2013).

After her lecture, Maggi Dawn will discuss the matter further with theologian Matthijs den Dulk. He is assistant professor Textual Sources of Judaism and Christianity at Radboud University. His research focusses mainly on racism and ethical prejudice in the Bible.
