De taal van politieke leiders verhardt. Gedurfde beweringen over minderheidsgroepen op basis van etniciteit, religie of seksuele identiteit komen steeds vaker voor en worden meer en meer vijandig. Tweede Wereldoorlog

Hasia Diner analyseert een aantal belangrijke historische voorbeelden. Hoe hebben bijvoorbeeld de Joden en andere minderheden tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog gereageerd op de hate speech die aan hen werd gericht? Wanneer is de hatelijke taal overgegaan in hatelijke daden? En wat veroorzaakte deze omslag?

Huidige situatie

Hasia Diner gebruikt haar onderzoek naar de geschiedenis om de huidige stand van zaken te bekijken. De Holocaust heeft de manier waarop we op antisemitisme reageren veranderd. Zijn de huidige vormen van hate speech vergelijkbaar of niet met de haat tegen de Joden in de vorige eeuw? En is hate speech het toppunt van vrijheid van meningsuiting? Of is het juist een gevaarlijk fenomeen dat moet worden ingeperkt en waartegen geprotesteerd moet worden?

Hasia Diner is een Amerikaanse historica. Zij is de Paul and Sylvia Steinberg Professor of American Jewish History at New York University and the Director of the Goldstein Goren Center for American Jewish History. Ze doet onderzoek naar de geschiedenis van de Joden in Amerika.

Frank van Caspel modereert de bijeenkomst. Hij is filosoof en cognitiewetenschapper. Hij promoveert aan de Open Universiteit op een onderzoek naar het concept van mind.

Political leaders’ speech is getting more and more harsh. Bold statements about minority groups based on ethnicity, religion or sexual identity are becoming more common and more hostile. Come learn from the American historian Hasia Diner about the history and effects  of hate speech. Does hate speech lead to hateful actions? What can we learn from the past?

World War II

Hasia Diner analyses important historical examples to explore the use and consequences of hate speech. For instance, she questions how Jews and other minority groups reacted to the hate speech addressed to them during World War II.  When did hate speech transform into hateful actions? What caused this transition?

Current situation

Hasia Diner uses her historical research about hate speech to analyse current inflammatory political rhetoric. She argues that the Holocaust for example changed the way we react to anti-Semitism nowadays. Is contemporary hate speech similar to, or very different from, the form that was directed against the Jews almost a century ago? Is hate speech the ultimate form of freedom of expression? Or is it a dangerous phenomenon that should be tamed and protested against?

About the speaker:

Hasia Diner is an American historian. She is the Paul and Sylvia Steinberg Professor of American Jewish History at New York University and the Director of the Goldstein Goren Center for American Jewish History. Her work focuses on the relationship of America to Jews and Judaism.

Frank van Caspel is the moderator of this evening. He is a philosopher and a cognitive scientist. As a PhD-candidate at the Open University he investigates the concept of mind.
