Psychologist and philosopher Carlo Strenger raises this urgent question in a society that is increasingly polarized between people on the left and right. Come find out how he paves the way for a new critical middle path: ‘civilized disdain’.

Two fronts

Public debate seems to be dominated by two types: on the one hand, those on the left who lean toward political correctness and avoid criticizing other cultures;  and, on the other hand those on the right, who often denigrate other cultures. Carlo Strenger argues that In the name of political correctness we tend to devaluate our own values by holding our tongues, instead of criticizing  others. But does this come at the cost of being untrue to our own beliefs?

Civilized disdain

Strenger rejects the idea of political correctness as incoherent and instead advocates for what he calls ‘civilized disdain’. He suggests that it is possible to defend the achievements of democracy without falling into the trap of nationalism.

Hushing up

After his lecture Carlo Strenger will discuss with philosopher Christoph Lüthy of Radboud University whether a lack of constructive criticism can be held responsible for the revival of far-right politics in Europe. Do politicians like Geert Wilders take advantage of the situation when we hush up our judgments? Could the polarization between left and right politics be prevented if we were less politically correct?

Carlo Strenger is a psychoanalyst and philosopher. He is professor of psychology at the University of Tel Aviv and is a member of the World Federation of Scientists’ Permanent Monitoring Panel on Terrorism.

In een wereld die steeds verder polariseert tussen links- en rechtsdenkenden stelt de Israëlische psycholoog en filosoof Carlo Strenger zich deze prangende vraag. Kom luisteren hoe hij de weg plaveit voor een nieuwe kritische middenweg: ‘beschaafde minachting’.

Twee kampen

Het publieke debat lijkt gevangen te zitten in twee kampen: de politiek correcten, die hun handen liever niet branden aan cultuurkritiek, versus de nationalisten, die de andere culturen nagenoeg volledig verafschuwen. Omwille van politieke correctheid zetten we onze eigen waarden soms aan de kant door kritiek op anderen voor ons te houden. Maar doen we daarmee genoeg recht aan onze eigen overtuigingen?

Beschaafde minachting

Carlo Strenger verwerpt het idee van politieke correctheid als incoherent en breekt een lans voor wat hij noemt ‘beschaafde minachting’. Hij pleit voor het verdedigen van de waarden van onze democratische rechtsstaat zonder in de val te trappen van het nationalisme.

Doofpot

Na zijn lezing gaat Carlo Strenger in gesprek met filosoof Christoph Lüthy van de Radboud Universiteit. De opkomst van extreemrechts in Europa valt misschien wel te wijten aan een gebrek aan gezonde kritiek in de samenleving. We stopten gezonde discussies in de doofpot waar politici als Geert Wilders gretig gebruik van hebben gemaakt. Had de huidige polarisering tussen links en rechts voorkomen kunnen worden als we minder politiek correct waren geweest?
